Would you like to teach maths, physics, computing, chemistry, languages, design and technology, biology or geography, but lack confidence in your subject knowledge?

You may still be able to train to teach these subjects (and be eligible for the bursaries they attract) by building up or refreshing your existing knowledge with a subject knowledge enhancement (SKE) programme.

SKE courses are offered to potential trainees to bring subject knowledge up to the level required to begin training to teach. Courses can vary from an 8-week refresher course up to a 28-week programme, depending on your individual needs.

If TESLA or a partner university feels you need to enhance your knowledge, we may offer you a teacher training place on the condition that you undertake an SKE course. This could be because your degree wasn’t in your chosen subject, but it was closely related, or you have an A level in the subject. Or it may be that you have relevant professional experience, and an SKE course will show you how to apply that to the curriculum and your teaching.

The courses are fully funded by the DfE with eligible candidates receiving a £200 per week tax-free bursary. You can apply directly here.
